Metro Detroit is the place to be if you enjoy Christmas and the holiday season. There is something to appeal to everyone and every age group. So grab you friends and families and get out there and take is all the amazing sites!
One of the most popular events is Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo. The event runs on weekends between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. Millions of LED lights cover everything from trees to buildings to the animal exhibits and even the train. Enjoy food, live entertainment and arts and crafts. Children can hear stories and visit the Lego train while sipping hot chocolate. Several short films are available to view including a 14 minute segment of the Polar Express. Families come back year after year and consider this a must see.
Greenfield Village does it up in style with their annual event, Holiday Nights. You can take an evening stroll through the village lit by only gas lanterns. You really get the feeling that you’ve gone back in time to a Christmas past. You can visit the historical building, hear live music at several stages throughout the village, listen and sing along to caroling, ice skate and even get a visit from Santa and his reindeer. The night is capped off by and amazing fireworks display. Model T rides are available as well as dinner packages but reserve early, they sell out!
Nothing says Christmas like the Christmas Tree Lighting at Campus Martius Park. The tree lighting is a well-attended and popular event that occurred this year on November 21st. If you missed the event, the marvelous 60 foot tree is still worth visiting. The park is right in the heart of Downtown Detroit and offers a wide variety of restaurants as well as ice skating nearby. Skates are available to rent and the holiday feeling is alive as you listen to music, sip hot chocolate and share the festivities with hundreds of visitors.
If you prefer to enjoy the view from a warm vehicle, you will be amazed by the Wayne County Lightfest in Westland. The attraction runs from November 20 through the end of year from 7pm to midnight. The route along Edward Hines Drive is 4 miles long and is the largest lightshow in the Midwest. Millions of lights and animated displays can be viewed as you travel through the winter wonderland.
Festival of Trees in Dearborn runs from November 20th to end of year at the beautiful Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. You can see professionally decorated trees, wreaths and gingerbread houses and the kids can see Santa. Proceeds from the event go to support of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan
The historical Edsel & Eleanor Ford House Seasonal Events in Grosse Pointe Shores offer up the holiday spirit and are very popular this time of year. Special holiday events run from December 5th to December 27th. An amazing light display with thousands of light, Nutcracker tea parties for children and adults, stories by the fireplace and Santa in his workshop are just some of the reasons you want to make this a must see over the holiday season.
The City of Rochester has a couple of options to get you in the holiday mood. You can visit the historic Meadowbrook Hall between November 28 and December 23 as they deck the halls with an amazing Christmas display. Many Christmas themed activities will delight you as you tour the mansion. In downtown Rochester, you will be amazed at the amount of lights displayed on each and every business that runs down city center. Drive or walk the streets and enjoy the wonderful shops and restaurants Rochester has to offer.
