Greenfield Village is over 200 acres of invention, inspiration and innovation, with over 300 years of history, 26 million artifacts, in an amazing collection started by Henry Ford. If you ever wanted to know what stepping back in time feels like, this is the place. Henry Ford’s devotion to preserving American history shows in this wonderful village. Model T Fords drive up and down the streets, steam engines chug down the track and historic homes and buildings make you feel like you’re living in the 1900’s.
A great way to see the village is to take the Weiser Railroad. The train is pulled by one of the Villages historic steam or diesel locomotives. Travel the three-mile route, with opportunities to get on and off at key stops throughout the Village. You can ride it as often as you wish and get a tour of the general scope of the place from the vantage of a historic train.
As you walk the village, you can visit the workshops of the great inventors of our time. Many historic buildings hold demonstrations where you can actually see people working. You can also see the homes of Noah Webster, The Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, William Holmes McGuffey, and several other major figures in history. The homes and buildings of these brilliant inventors have been brought to Greenfield Village where you are welcome to walk right inside.
If you are ready for lunch, try The Eagle Tavern which is an authentic 1831 coach stop and tavern. The food is basic, which is how it would have been in the 1830’s. You will really feel like you’re stepping back in time at the tavern.
