The Detroit Institute of Arts has been Detroit’s cultural center for over 50 years and has something for any art lover’s taste. The DIA collection is considered one of the top six in the United States but in Detroit, its number one. The museum is home to over 100 galleries featuring world famous exhibits including American, European, Modern, Contemporary, and Graphic Art. The museum also houses works of African, Asian, Native American, Oceanic, Islamic, and Ancient art. While the museum holds an enormous collection of permanent exhibits, nearly every month the museum brings in limited attractions that are so impressive people buy their tickets weeks in advance. Two of the most well-known permanent exhibits are the Diego Rivera mural depicting Detroit industry and Vincent Van Gogh’s Self Portrait.
The museum is so much more than art though. The Detroit Film Theater, located in the building, is becoming more and more popular over the years as people become aware of the exceptional films that are brought exclusively to the DFT. The DFT also holds multiple showings of the Oscar nominated short films and animated shorts as well as the foreign films and documentaries that pack the house week after week.
Music lovers have plenty of options to enjoy a variety of musical events including a new series of concerts, Sundays at 1:00 and 3:00 pm. The Sunday Music Bar features a diverse mix of acoustic music you can enjoy while sipping a glass of wine or a cup of tea. More live music is available on Friday nights and includes art making workshops that are fun for the whole family.
